Atomic Volleyball

Atomic Volleyball is for kids aged 9-12 years old.

There is a great need for youth recreational programming in the sport of volleyball. The ATOMIC volleyball program can help fill this need; it is a comprehensive 8-week program with adapted rules (smaller court, lower net, fewer players per side, softer volleyballs). Atomic Volleyball stresses FUN, FAIRPLAY, and PARTICIPATION by increasing the number of ball contacts per player, creating longer and more successful rallies, and by developing proper skill delivery.

The Atomic Volleyball program was developed in conjunction with the Canadian Sport for Life Manual (Long Term Athlete Development) and provides programming for the LEARNING TO TRAIN STAGE which targets boys= ages 9 to 12, and girls= ages 8-11.

ATOMIC participants will learn the basics of volleyball: forearm and overhead passing, hitting, serving, basic team movement, and sportsmanship. Each session is 1.5 hours; every session begins with a 45-minute section focused on skills followed by 45 minutes of modified game play.

WHO CAN RUN AN ATOMIC PROGRAM?

Volleyball Clubs, schools, or community associations can run their own ATOMIC program. The ATOMIC volleyball manual provides the instructor (who may or may not have previous knowledge of the sport) all of the tools and information necessary to run a successful program.

The ATOMIC program can be used as a fundraiser for your team, as a feeder-system into your sport programming, and as an opportunity to develop coaches by offering older athletes a coaching experience.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO RUN AN ATOMIC PROGRAM?

- ATOMIC manual (only $19.95 plus tax).
- Facility (a gymnasium or other suitable structure with a minimum height of 7 m)** please note: the ATOMIC program may be run outdoors **
- Equipment (minimum of 1 Volleylite volleyball for every two participants)
- Head instructor (with completed Criminal Record Check and First Aid Certification)
- Assistant instructors (ideally parents or older club-players)
- Insurance (VPEI registered clubs will already have the appropriate insurance).

ARE THE LESSON PLANS PROVIDED?

The ATOMIC manual contains session plans for an eight-week program. Each session offers three levels of drills to accommodate the varying level of players; your instructor will simply have to choose which of the provided drills to use each day. The basic set-up is as follows:

Session 1- Setting Skills: Overhead Passing and Back Setting

Session 2 - Passing Skills: Forearm Pass

Session 3 - Serving Skills: Underhand Serving and Overhand Serving

Session 4 - Attacking Skills: Spiking and Tipping

Session 5 - Defensive Skill: Blocking

Session 6 - Defensive Skill: Stride and Slide

Session 7 - Team Play

Session 8 - Tournament Play

HOW CAN THE PROGRAM BE USED AS A FUNDRAISER?

In order to understand how the ATOMIC program can be used as a fundraiser, one needs to examine a sample budget. Please note that the fee structure, gym fees, instructor fees, and equipment costs are variable and need to be adapted to your program.Although Volleyball PEI will gladly provide advice for your program, it is your club/school/association that is responsible for collecting all the registration information and money.
